Before and After: Kristin and Jimmy's Basement Remodel
Kristin & Jimmy heard about us from their neighbor, Tina, another client that we’ve worked with on several remodel projects. They have a beautiful home in Medina, and have slowly been making changes to personalize it and lighten up the dark decor. It was time for some basement updates and at the same time, they wanted to finish a storage area that was doubling as their home gym. They have 4 children who enjoy work outs and sports, so the gym gets much use!
The Home Gym
The old space that held the workout equipment had an improvised look with its mix of different mat flooring and exposed ceiling. Kristin wanted their new gym to have a studio feel, and at first she struggled with flooring choices. She didn’t want to go with the popular and durable rubber flooring that felt more like a true gym, so we landed on luxury vinyl plank that has light gray and warm tones and a sleek pattern. We kept the wall paint light and painted the trim white so this space will feel bright and light. New LED lighting will make an impact also.
They wanted to add a large mirror for form and function and we selected a wall that would make the most sense. Jimmy wanted to be sure we considered correct placement of the 2 TV’s. Although we didn’t increase the size of this room, the finishes will make it feel much more spacious.
The Wine Bar
We modified an early 2000’s built-in that had a large area for an older TV and was stained quite dark. Meg suggested changing the TV opening to a small wine bar, so we painted the built-in to Sherwin Williams Storm Cloud and added a quartz countertop, a beautiful AKDO tile backsplash, glass in some cabinet doors, and added accent lighting in a few areas.
The re-purposing of this space along with the new finish will make the entire room feel like new!
The Main Bar
Across the room is a large bar with lots of seating. They use this space for entertaining family and friends and it also needed some refresh.
We left the original stain of the knotty alder but removed the wood bar top & brown laminate countertops in the rest of the area, replacing them with MSI Calacatta Prado – a beautiful light quartz. The tile backsplash is definitely the show stopper; the sapphire blue glass tile with a unique pattern will completely change the feel of this great space! We also added 2 floating shelves and LED accent lighting, along with a modern undermount sink and faucet.
We also suggested adding cork tiles to the dartboard wall that was getting much use and abuse by the whole family. The result was a fun, recreational accent wall!
This space we customized for Kristin and Jimmy’s family truly revolves around their lifestyle. Kristin has also mentioned that there has not been a night they have skipped family time!
